Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Richard's career has spanned the full spectrum of production work.

He's produced over 50 albums, from Heavy Metal, Reggae, Blues, Bollywood, Bhangra, Rock and Roll, New Age, Jazz, Pop and Garage, and hundreds of TV and radio commercials.

As a musician, he's played on over 170 recordings and performed in 28 countries on 5 continents. He has composed for a myriad of artists, television series, news and current affairs programs and commercials, and contributed to the sound design for a number of Hollywood films including An American Werewolf in London, Superman II, III & IV, and Flash Gordon. Richard has also provided interactive inflight entertainment content for 9 major airlines and has worked extensively with interactive television broadcasters in developing educational content.

Richard is Head of Music and Audio Technology and Director of Employability at the University of Kent. He is the National Chair of the Education Committee of the Musicians Union and sits on the Executive Committee of the MU. He is on the Policy and Public Affairs Committee of UK Music and is a committee member of the Council of Music Makers. He is the current Industry Liaison and former Chief Executive Officer of the Music Producers Guild.

Lightman has a PhD in Music Technology. His research looks at cultural interaction in the recording studio and the title of his thesis is "Producing Bhangra: Music, Culture and Technology, Mediating Culture in Music Production".
